"Just Jeepin'" (macintux)

Today was such a good day. I started out with a small group traveling some rugged back roads around Madison, Indiana that I’ve often driven, I stopped at large car show and took photos I’ll eventually get around to uploading, I found some new gr avel roads and a river crossing I didn’t know about.
And then.
Then I got my initiation to the real world of Jeeping, the dark corner oft referred to in ominous whispers.
Death Wobble.
I’ve been fighting some minor wobbling for a few weeks. Repeating balancing and rotations haven’t worked. I had 5 u-joints replaced this week in hopes that might solve it.
And suddenly, a minor wobble today became a clattering , clanking nightmare of terror.
Now I’m at a hotel a couple of hours from home, having limped there trying to stay under 40, and I’ll be trying to find a route home that takes me entirely on back roads. Bumpier, thus more likely to introduce instability, but slower, and ones where I can pull over in an emergency. And of course it’s a holiday weekend and the mechanic I trust most is nowhere near where I live so I’ll have to get it to him somehow next week.
At least I’m on good terms with the local car rental agencies. Repeat customer and all that.
I admit, I’m getting tired of throwing money into this pit.

Thinking of updating my steering from whenever I drove it last.
No stabilizer, ZJ drag link. Everything else is stock.

Bummer dude, hope you make where you need to be, safely.
More than likely your wobble is being caused by worn steering/suspension components, along with less-than-ideal front geometry. The latter would have been caused by what I’m assuming was a mild lift, in order to fit those 32s? Balancing will help but I doubt it’ll solve your issue. New joints and bushings will do the most and getting longer swing links will help get the axle where it needs to be.
So l ve this is sue and you’ll get another punch on your Jeep membership card.
Oh yeah, g ood luck !

Mine hasn’t gone full DW, but in t he last month it has wabbled more than I like. I’ve done the dry steering test and nothing seems out of spec. I have a couple of torn tie rod boots, so I’m thinking about replacing those as a start to the cure. I can’t imagine daily ing a Rubi, but can imagine the joy and frustrations.

I'm recommending s teering joints, not u-join ts, since you already replaced those.

As long as you’re safe. Cell phones and AAA are a winning combo.

Steering stabilizer, if it’s old replace it, if you don’t have one, consider adding one, if you do, maybe add another or upgraded one. Some people think it’s just a band-aid and not a fix, but death wobble is just an uncontrolled resonance. Yes, there’s a cause like worn components or bad angles, but the real problem is the wobble and it’s lack of stopping or slowing until you do. Anything to eliminate or dampen that resonance
and take energy out of it will get rid of the wobble.
